The peak season beach rules are in effect from April 1 – September 30. This includes rules for pets. For a full list of rules, click here.

Restricted Area (Red):

• The restricted area begins at a line extending from Boardwalk #1 (Community Center Boardwalk) to the Atlantic Ocean and continues in a northeasterly direction to Cap’n Sams Inlet.
• Within the restricted area, no pets shall be allowed at any time, whether on or off a leash.

Limited Restriction (Yellow):

• The limited restriction area begins approximately 300 yards northwest of a line extending from Boardwalk #9 (Pelican Watch Boardwalk) to the Edisto River and continues in a northwesterly direction to Privateer Creek.
• Within the limited restriction area, pets must be on a leash at all times.

General Beach Area (Green):

In all other areas of the beach, the following seasonal rules shall apply:

• Peak Season (April 1 – September 30): Pets must be on a leash between the hours of 10:00am and 5:00pm. At all other times, pets may be off leash, provided they remain effectively controlled while on the beach;
• Off-Peak Season (October 1 – March 31): Pets may be off a leash at all times, provided they remain effectively controlled while on the beach.

When a pet is required to be on a leash, it must be restrained using a physical restraint made of cord, rope, strap, chain or other material effective for restraining the type and size of animal to which it is attached. In addition, the physical restraint must be no more than sixteen (16) feet in length, secured to the animal’s collar or harness, and continuously held by a competent person physically capable of restraining the animal. Animals under voice control, or under control of remotely operated devices (such as electronic collars), are considered to be “off leash”.

When an animal is allowed to be off-leash, it must be effectively controlled by a competent person from: (a) entering any area on or adjacent to the beach in which a pet is prohibited; (b) destroying or damaging any property; (c) attacking or threatening to attack any person or any other animal or pet in any manner; or (d) being a nuisance to other beach goers.

The beaches of Seabrook Island are actively patrolled by code enforcement officers employed by the town, as well as designated personnel from the Seabrook Island Beach Patrol.

Beach Patrol officers begin patrolling on April 1.

Emergency Ordinance No. 2024-01

On October 23, 2024, Town Council adopted Emergency Ordinance 2024-01 in an effort to protect beachgoers (and their pets) from hazards resulting from the ongoing sand scraping and seawall repair projects.

Effective immediately, the following temporary rules are now in effect:

Temporary Beach Rules for Pets

• Atlantic Ocean Beach
  • Pets are prohibited (on- or off-leash) at all times between Boardwalk #1 and Captain Sams Inlet – NO CHANGE
  • Pets must be on-leash (24/7) between the Boardwalk #1 and the Beach Club – NEW
• Edisto River Beach
  • Pets are allowed off-leash (24/7) between the Beach Club and 300 yards NW of Boardwalk #9 – NO CHANGE
  • Pets must be on-leash (24/7) between 300 yards NW of Boardwalk #9 and Privateer Creek – NO CHANGE

Temporary Beach Rules for Beach Fires

• Atlantic Ocean Beach
  • Beach fires are prohibited between the Beach Club and Captain Sams Inlet – NEW
• Edisto River Beaches
  • Beach fires are allowed above the high-water mark with a valid SIPOA Beach Fire Permit between the Beach Club and 300 yards NW of Boardwalk #9 – NO CHANGE
  • Beach fires are prohibited between 300 yards NW of Boardwalk #9 and Privateer Creek – NEW

Temporary Beach Closures

• Atlantic Ocean Beach
  • Beach access will be open during the daytime hours (sunrise to sunset) – NO CHANGE
  • Beach access will be closed during the nighttime hours (sunset to sunrise) – NEW 
• Edisto River Beaches
  • Beach access will remain open at all times – NO CHANGE

The provisions of Emergency Ordinance 2024-01 will expire on November 22, 2024 at 11:59pm, unless extended by Town Council.

10/8/24 – The Town of Seabrook Island is continuing to monitor the Major Category 4 Hurricane Milton. Charleston County is currently under a Tropical Storm Watch. The National Weather Service says Milton is expected to make landfall in Florida late Wednesday evening.

The storm will then pass to our south in the Lowcountry. Local meteorologists say the biggest impact we could see will be coastal flooding around the high tide cycle on Thursday. They say rainfall will be minimal for our area. Winds could be 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph for inland areas and 20-25 mph with 40 mph gusts along our beaches. The rip current risk is high all week, so they are urging people to stay out of the ocean. Beach Patrol Season has ended for 2024 on Seabrook Island, so there are no Beach Patrol personnel on our beaches. We can expect these storm impacts on Thursday.

Please continue to follow our local meteorologists, as the track of the storm will depend on how significant these impacts are along our coast. We will be monitoring the storm and send out updates as needed.

10/7/24 – The Town of Seabrook Island is continuing to monitor the Major Category 4 Hurricane Milton. The National Weather Service does expect this storm to become a Category 5 Hurricane by tomorrow. This system will make landfall in Florida late Wednesday.

The storm will then pass to our south in the Lowcountry, but we could experience coastal flooding, rough ocean conditions, gusty winds, and some rain on Thursday. We will be on the weaker side of the storm.

Please continue to follow our local meteorologists, as the track of the storm will depend on what impacts we see here along our coast. We will be monitoring the impacts and send out updates as needed.
