Beach Management Update

Next month, SIPOA will begin a sand scraping project to relocate sand from an area of the beach with an abundant sand supply to an area of the beach with a diminished sand supply.

150,000 cubic yards of sand will be moved from the intertidal beach in the area in front of Boardwalk 1 to the area between Boardwalks 7 and 9. Many residents have noticed the erosion at the end of Boardwalk 9 and the recently closed Boardwalk 7. This project will rebuild the dry sand beach in these areas and in front of the seawall.

SIPOA maintains a wide range of infrastructure on the island including stormwater, roads, beaches, and lakes. In an effort to help educate residents on how SIPOA manages this infrastructure, we have created an Infrastructure Master Plan. Managing Seabrook Island’s Dynamic Shoreline

When Seabrook Island was developed in the 1970’s, the beach looked very different than it does today. Several unsuccessful shoreline management strategies were implemented before finally establishing stability through an innovative inlet relocation program.

Oyster Catcher Stormwater Outfall Update

The marsh excavation work at the stormwater pipe outfall from Oyster Catcher Ct. has been completed. This project allows for better stormwater drainage during and after a rain event. This stormwater pipe was originally installed approximately 50 years ago. Over time, the marsh changed and accreted significantly in front of the stormwater pipe outfall. This adversely effects the ability to move stormwater.

The before and after photographs clearly demonstrate the impact of this work. A stormwater check valve will also be installed at the end of this pipe to prevent tidal flooding on Oyster Catcher Ct.

Stormwater Projects Update 2026

OLD FOREST PIPE REPLACEMENT

Construction is complete on Old Forest Drive.

The undersized pipe has been replaced with a 2ft by 4ft box culvert to increase the flow capacity between the two ponds within the finger lakes.

The road has been replaced and is open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.


OYSTER CATCHER OUTFALL EXCAVATIONS

The stormwater outfall excavation into the marsh from Oyster Catcher Drive is nearly complete. As of this writing, the contractor has completed 450 out of 500 feet of new channel excavation.

The project should be completed by early April and will provide improved stormwater drainage after a rain event in this area.


FINGER LAKES OUTFALL STRUCTURE REPLACEMENT

Construction will begin in early April to replace the outfall structure that discharges stormwater from the finger lakes into the marsh.

New automated controls will be installed to more effectively control water levels in the lakes and prevent tidal flooding into the ponds.

This work is expected to take 3-4 months.

Old Forest Pipe Replacement Update

Work to replace a pipe culvert between two ponds on Old Forest Drive continues. The picture below shows the new box culvert that is being installed. The road surface has been removed along with the old pipe. The new box culvert is 4’x2’ and made of concrete, and can be seen in the photo. You can also see the two large blue “aqua dams” that serve as a cofferdam structure to keep water out of the excavation area. 

The road will remain closed for another 3-5 weeks until the work is complete and the road is repaved.

Finger Lakes Stormwater Projects

There will be two large stormwater projects taking place within the Finger Lakes drainage basin in early 2026. These projects were identified in the 2020 Island Wide Stormwater Master Plan. These projects will be the 9th and 10th projects completed that were identified for implementation from this master plan. The two projects are outlined below:

  • Finger Lakes Outfall Structure Replacement: The current outfall structure where water from the finger lakes discharges into the marsh is at the end of its design life and allows tidal flooding into the lake system during king tide events.  The structure and the discharge piping will be replaced with a new more resilient system that will prevent tidal flooding and provide automated control of the water level in the lake system.
  • Old Forest Culvert Replacement: Currently there is an 18” corrugated metal pipe that connects two of the Finger Lakes underneath Old Forest Dr.  This pipe is over 40 years old and is undersized.  It will be replaced with a new 4’ x 2’ box culvert that will provide additional flow capacity and a longer service life.

The work on Old Forest Lane requires the excavation and removal of pipe under the roadway. This will necessitate the closure of Old Forest Lane for a period of 8-10 weeks. Beginning on February 2, 2026, Old Forest Lane will be closed at the causeway. The anticipated reopening date is April 6, 2026. Some residents living on Old Forest Lane may have to detour from their normal route as shown in the figure below.

We will work to get this project completed as quickly as possible and restore the normal traffic pattern.

Oyster Catcher Marsh Outfall Excavation Project

You may have noticed some white stakes in the marsh that can be seen from the bridge on Seabrook Island Road as you look toward Oyster Catcher. This is the alignment for the drainage channel that will be excavated in the marsh to promote positive drainage from the end of the stormwater pipe to the tidal channel. The alignment can be seen in the aerial image below. 

This channel existed when the stormwater piping was originally installed, but gradually filled in over time.  This is a maintenance project to ensure that stormwater on Oyster Catcher can drain effectively after a rain event.  It is scheduled to be completed in early 2026.

New Pumps at Stormwater Pump Station #1

New pumps, motors, and controls were installed at stormwater pump station #1 last week. The old equipment was at the end of its useful life and was scheduled to be replaced this year.

These photos show one of the new pumps being lifted into place by a crane. There is also a photo of the two old pumps and motors that were removed lying on a trailer.

These pumps are 12 feet tall and pump water off of Seabrook Island Rd. near Coon Hollow Ln. after a rain event. These new pumps and controls will allow SIPOA to continue to provide resilient stormwater management in this area.
