Boardwalk 9 Erosion & Planned Sand Relocation Project

Many residents have noticed the erosion that has occurred at Boardwalk 9. In the past several years, erosion has shortened the length of this boardwalk and caused some significant changes to the beach in this area. Currently, the boardwalk is open and accessible, but residents access the beach differently than they have in the past, as shown in the attached photo.

There are plans to improve the condition of the beach in this area. SIPOA plans to conduct a sand scraping project to relocate 150,000 cubic yards of sand along Seabrook Island’s shoreline. The sand scraping permit requires that this work be completed between October 1 and December 31 to avoid impacts to beach habitat. Beginning in October 2026, sand will be collected from the intertidal beach in the area in front of Boardwalk 1, and hauled by truck along the beach to be placed in the area in front of Boardwalk 9. Enough sand will be relocated to create a 100 foot-wide dry sand beach in front of Boardwalk 9. SIPOA is also working to obtain permits to repair the old seawall that has become exposed in this area. If permits are received prior to October 1, the seawall repair may also be completed in 2026.

SIPOA regularly monitors the condition of the Seabrook Island shoreline, and plans for shoreline rehabilitation projects such as these in the annual capital budget. SIPOA also maintains a reserve fund for beach repair and maintenance that can be used to respond to storm damage or other emergencies.

We appreciate your patience as we work to keep the Seabrook Island shoreline in great condition.

Beach Project Update – 2/28/25

The sand recycling scope of work was completed in December 2024. The seawall repairs were completed on February 21, 2025. The seawall has now been restored to it originally permitted height and condition.

A video showing the length of the current seawall is below. You will notice the significant growth of wet sand beach from the Beach Club towards Dolphin Point. This wet sand beach is accessible at low tide and should continue to grow south as sand moves in this direction.

The contractor will be working on demobilization and site restoration and should be complete by the end of March.

Beach Project Update – 1/30/25

The contractor is beginning the third and final phase of the seawall repair and beach restoration project this week.

The seawall repairs at Dolphin Point and Beach Club Villas have been completed. The contractor is now working between boardwalk 8 and the Beach Club. This work will take approximately one month to complete and will be done ahead of the permitted April completion date.

Please see the picture below: the wet sand beach that has formed in this area since the sand relocation was completed in December. This area can be accessed at low tide and provides additional stability to the base of the seawall.

Seawall Repair Update – 1/6/25

The beach renourishment contractor, SJ Hamill, continues the seawall repair work in the area of Beach Club Villas and Dolphin Point. They are currently averaging 200 tons of armor stone delivery per day from the quarry. This section of the seawall requires around 6,000 tons of stone repair. The contractor is approximately 50% complete and they should be done with this section of seawall by the end of February.

They will begin setting up the staging area for the final section between Boardwalk 8 and the Beach Club in mid-January. Seawall repairs in this section will begin after Beach Club Villas and Dolphin Point are complete and continue into April.

Beach Project Status Update – 12/13/24

The sand scraping project has been completed. 150,000 cubic yards of sand was transferred from the area of the beach around boardwalk 1 to the area of the beach between boardwalk 6 and 7. This work was completed in under 8 weeks.

The result is a new dry sand beach in an area where there was previously none. This series of pictures below were taken from boardwalk 7. The first was taken just before the project began on 9/30/24 and the last was taken on 12/13/24. These pictures do a good job of comparing the before and after conditions to illustrate just how impactful this project was.

Repairs to the seawall in the area of Beach Club Villas are currently underway. This work will continue into February. After it is completed, the third and final phase of seawall repairs will be completed in the area between the Club and boardwalk 8.

Beach Project Update – 12/4/24

Beachfront sand scraping and seawall repairs have been completed in the area between boardwalk 6 and the Beach Club.

Seawall repairs are underway in the area around Beach Club Villas. These repairs require sand, filter fabric, rip rap, and armor stone to be installed to rebuild the seawall.

The work is ongoing and is scheduled to be completed by April 2025.

Beach Project Update – 11/22/24

The sand scraping and seawall repair work from boardwalk 6 to the Beach Club has been completed.

The contractor is working to create a construction access point between Dolphin Point and Beach Club Villas. They have begun stockpiling materials here for the seawall repair work in this area.

The seawall repairs are scheduled to extend into April 2025, but the contractor is ahead of schedule at this point.

We will provide schedule updates when they are available.

Beach Project Update – 11/15/24

The sand placement and seawall repair work from boardwalk 6 to the Beach Club will be completed this week. Boardwalks 3-7 will reopen on Monday (11/18/24). There is still some work going on at the beach access between boardwalks 1 and 2. Boardwalk 2 will remain closed and boardwalk 1 remains open. Work will begin on the seawall at Beach Club Villas beginning next week.

Beach Project Schedule Update – 10/31/24

The sand recycle and seawall repair contractor, SJ Hamill, began working on seawall repairs on October 1. They began sand scraping and hauling on October 15. Thanks to some incredible weather and calm seas, they are currently ahead of the initial projected schedule. As of 10/31/24, the contractor has placed 3,000 of the 3,500 tons of armor stone specified for the repairs of the seawall from boardwalk 6 to the Beach Club. They have also hauled and placed 77,000 of the 150,000 specific cubic yardage of sand. The photo below shows the dry sand beach area that has been reestablished between boardwalks 6 and 7.

If our favorable weather conditions continue, we expect to be done placing armor stone from boardwalk 6 to the Beach Club by November 8 and sand scraping could be completed as early as November 22. The next phase of work will be the seawall repair at Beach Club Villas and Dolphin Point. Material staging could begin in this area as early as November 11.

We are grateful for all of the hard work from our engineer, Coastal Science and Engineering, and our contractor, SJ Hamill, to get this project off to a great start.

Beach Project Update

Sand scraping began this week on 10/15/24. Sand is being scraped from the intertidal area in front of BW1 and hauled to the area between boardwalks 6 and 7. This work will take place during low tide during the day and night through December.

Please plan to avoid using this section of the beach if possible.

Boardwalk 9 is open and unaffected by this project.

If you do access this section of the beach, please stay in the dry sand beach area in front of boardwalks 4 and 5.

Thank you for your patience as we work to keep Seabrook Island’s beach in great condition.
