Beneath the Surface: SBI Tidal Gauge

COMMUNITY EDUCATION – SIPOA INFRASTRUCTURE

SIPOA maintains a wide range of infrastructure on the island including stormwater, roads, beaches, and lakes. In an effort to help educate residents on how SIPOA manages this infrastructure, we have created an Infrastructure Master Plan. This page serves as a dashboard that outlines SIPOA’s infrastructure management practices. Each month we will highlight a different piece of the Infrastructure Master Plan.

SEABROOK ISLAND TIDAL GAUGE

This month, we witnessed some HUGE tides on Seabrook Island. Tide height is monitored in many locations along the coast. In SC, the closest federal tide gauge is in Charleston Harbor and it is monitored by NOAA. Years ago, SIPOA decided to add a local tide gauge on Seabrook Island to collect better tide height data specific to Seabrook. Residents can access this data here to observe real-time tide data on Seabrook Island.

FUN FACT: October typically produces the highest tides of the year and the tide height peaked last week on Seabrook Island at 8.51’ (MLLW) on Monday (10/26/26) at 8:54 AM. Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) is a vertical datum that references the average of the lowest tide of each day as elevation zero. The MLLW datum varies spatially and can be slightly different in locations along the SC coast depending on the local tide conditions.
